As a full time fishing guide, outdoor writer, seminar speaker and on the Penn research & development test team; I’ve seen a few spinning reels. Day in and day out, I fish with spinning reels. They are easy to cast, easy to care for and sometimes easy for my clients to tear up! I don’t know how clients do it; but they do, new anglers will find any weakness in a fishing product! I finally have found a client and or new angler proof reel! This reel is a pleasure to fish with! It’s the new Conquer spinning reel by Penn.
I’ve used the Conquer for the last ten mouths and after ten mouths there still like they just came out of the box. The new Penn Conquer is one tough reel! Finally a true Braid Ready spinning reel with a drag system that can take the abuse of braid and its high test. The Conquer comes in four sizes 2000, 4000, 5000 and 7000. Drag powers 2000 12 pounds, 4000 19 pounds, 5000 22 pounds and 7000 32 pounds. Conquers come with a Superline (braid) ready spool; no backing needed because of a rubber gasket on the spool keeps braid from slipping. It also has the E.A.S. Easy Access System which allows easy access to key internal parts for lubrication.
I’m very happy with the way this reel performs. For me as a guide one of the biggest advantages this reel has for me; I can step down a size in spinning reels for fishing. I used to use a 4000 size reel for Redfishing on charters and during tournaments now I’m using a 2000 Conquer; lighter & smaller yet stronger! Take a look at this great series at www.pennreels.com If you have any questions about the Conquer, let me know.

Capt. Jot,
I purchased the Penn conquer 5000 spinning reel late last fall to pair with an 8′ St. Croix Mojo Surf rod (3/4 to 3 oz rated) to fish for bluefish and stripers using plugs and metal off the jettys and surf in NJ and Long Island. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to catch anything on it yet. I have been trying to figure out another application for the 5000… and another rod to pair it with. Most of the reviews I have read have been for the 4000 series, which seems to be the most popular and the most versatile. Could you give me some suggestions? It seems too light for big game… but too heavy for redfishing or kayak angling. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Regards,
Dan Weber
Thanks for the review, my girl wants this reel for Christmas and I’ve been trying to find some reviews on it. Looks like I’m going to have to shell out for this one. She deserves it.
Thanks Again,

How did that conquer fit on your mojo? I have a 450 ssg on my 9″ mojo and it barely fit into the reel seat.
Purchased a Penn Conquer 5000. Why is the line capacity on the box different from the product specs?
